The Teen Philanthropy Network Program
A two-year experience designed to help high school students develop the knowledge, judgment, and confidence to give thoughtfully and lead community impact.
What is Teen Philanthropy Network?
Teen Philanthropy Network is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors designed to introduce students to philanthropy through real-world experience. Students learn how nonprofits operate, how community needs are identified, and how thoughtful giving can create meaningful impact.
Through education, collaboration, and hands-on grantmaking, students gain a deeper understanding of how resources can be used responsibly to strengthen communities.
Who Participates?
This is a two-year program for Glenbard West high school juniors and seniors who are curious about leadership, community engagement, and making a difference.
Each cohort includes a small group of students, allowing for meaningful discussion, collaboration, and mentorship. Students do not need prior experience in volunteering or philanthropy — only a willingness to learn and engage thoughtfully.
Junior Year: Learning Through Grantmaking
During their junior year, students explore the fundamentals of philanthropy by learning how nonprofits operate, researching community needs, visiting local organizations, and evaluating grant proposals.
Students work together to:
Identify priority issues in the community
Meet with nonprofit leaders
Discuss and debate funding decisions
Allocate real grant dollars to local organizations
This experience gives students real responsibility while building skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and decision-making.
Senior Year: Leading Through Fundraising
In their senior year, students take on the responsibility of sustaining the program for future cohorts. Seniors lead fundraising efforts that support future grantmaking and program activities.
Students gain experience in:
Writing donor appeals
Meeting with community supporters
Submitting grant applications
Helping organize fundraising events
Through this process, students learn how philanthropy is supported over time and how community partnerships make impact possible.
What Students Gain
Students leave the program with:
Greater understanding of community needs
Confidence in decision-making
Stronger communication and collaboration skills
Experience evaluating nonprofit impact
Exposure to leadership and civic engagement
A deeper appreciation for thoughtful giving
Impact on the Community
Each year, students direct real funding to local nonprofits addressing important community needs. The program not only supports organizations doing meaningful work but also encourages young people to become lifelong participants in civic life.
Time Commitment
Students meet once per month throughout the school year for classroom sessions and participate in ad hoc nonprofit site visits. The program takes place over two academic years. The schedule is designed to be manageable alongside academic and extracurricular commitments.
